Linking people with acromegaly in New Zealand
- Has your shoe size increased over the last 5 years?
- Did you have to change your wedding ring or ring over the last 5 years because it became tight?
If you answer Yes to one or both of the above questions, you may have undiagnosed acromegaly.
Acromegaly is caused by excessive growth hormone production, marked by progressive enlargement of hands, feet and face. Acromegaly is most commonly caused by a growth hormone-producing pituitary tumour.
Acromegaly accounts for a small part of the population diagnosed with pituitary tumours. It is a rare condition and is found in approx 40–60 people in every million.
There are approximately 50 people with acromegaly in the Auckland region.
The New Zealand Acromegaly Society was formed in November 2010, and the response to this support group has been tremendous. We have now grown to over 50 patient members from all around New Zealand.
